The pandemic has placed remote working in the spotlight, with many businesses and employees coming to understand the range of benefits for the first time.
However, new research from recruitment platform CodinGame shows organizations aren’t rushing to offer remote working positions to new tech employees, which could make finding and retaining top talent a challenge.
Analyzing the state of the UK job market, CodinGame found that less than a quarter (23 percent) of developer jobs currently advertised in the UK are remote positions. Of all the places with 50 or more developer job posts, Birmingham has the highest percentage of remote positions, at just 38 percent.
For Aude Barral, co-founder and CCO at CodinGame, the trend is “concerning”.
“Even though the country is slowly coming out of lockdown, we would still have expected the number of companies offering remote programming roles to be higher,” she said. “With companies investing heavily in digital and cloud infrastructures, a developer role can be carried out effortlessly away from the office.”
“Businesses need to be looking to hire now, because with more and more companies moving their operations online as a consequence of the pandemic, there is huge demand for talented developers, and that demand is only likely to increase. But by limiting their searches to developers who can travel into the office, companies may find they’ll struggle to fill highly specialized tech positions. “
