Covid-19 has forced many organizations to speed up their digital transformation, resulting in the creation of unprecedented amounts of data and putting databases under strain. To solve this emerging problem, businesses are turning towards cloud-based solutions.
This is according to a new report from database management system SingleStore, based on a poll of 500 IT professionals, which claims data demands have risen since the start of the pandemic for the majority (85 percent).
Many also said their existing databases can’t manage the workload, with almost half (43 percent) experiencing three to four database-related bottlenecks in the past year. More than a fifth faced six to seven bottlenecks, and almost three-quarters (72 percent) are considering changing their database services.
As businesses weigh their options, cloud-based solutions are emerging as potential problem-solvers. Almost half (46 percent) consider their current solution too expensive, and more than two in five (41 percent) said it didn’t meet new workload demands. For more than a third (38 percent), their existing database reached end of life.
“The conventional wisdom in recent years has been to use a specialized datastore per workload. This is a relic of the previous era of cloud data management. It isn’t effective for achieving the real-time analytics experience that is essential in modern applications and winning SaaS products,” said SingleStore CEO Raj Verma.
“Analytics provide a clear direction on the steps that organizations can take to keep customers and employees happy, and even save lives. Yet many organizations forego analytics in exchange for better database performance.”
